GameStop is leaning heavily to trading cards as part of it's future strategy, according to CEO Ryan Cohen The news comes as a part of larger strategy shift to buy and hold a lot of bitcoin Cohen has said that continuing to focus on trading cards, including the incredibly popular recent Pokémon card sets, is a "natural extension" of GameStop

GameStop tried retro stuff multiple times in the past Every time the end result was lots of stuff getting scrapped making things even rarer They also did have exclusive physical releases People will point at the move to digital being the main factor, but it's much more than that GameStop made a lot of money by having a stream of new releases

When I worked at Electronics Boutique (EB Games) 20 years ago, the display case on the shelf was the "gutted" copy that was filed behind the counter I'm not sure who or what started it, this was before the Gamestop merge as well But, I'm surprised they STILL do it So many people hated it then, so many people hate it now, and understandably so

Granted, I did not read the article, but board games themselves have been growing greatly in popularity In my neighborhood alone, there are multiple posts in our neighborhood FB group about hosing games nights and such Gamestop could still sell used video games, along with board games, table top RPGs and the like Keeps their name relevant, IMO

Some interesting news, Gamestop has sold their Canadian operations to a Canadian entrepreneur who is re-branding all the stores back to 'EB Games' (which was the prominent game store here Gamestop bought out) Saying all the right things about making things better, etc etc -- will be interesting to see how it goes

Gamestop has always done right by me personally and i have alot of fantastic memories from their tbh I remember going to a tournament they held locally for smash brothers brawl on release night with my dad, my brother, and me and i had an absolute blast meeting all these gamer dudes girls

I remember for the Wii launch I camped out at a Best Buy overnight to get one I had gathered about $400 worth of "Best Buy cash" from the then-recent McDonalds Monopoly game (where you got either $1 or $5 "cash coupons" to Best Buy) with value meals and whatnot

I have this bad feeling Gamestop isnt going to ship my Switch 2 on time for the 5th On the 30th, I got hit with fraud alert I immediately approved it once I found out, but its still says preparing to ship
